Welcome

Welcome to the Association for Tarot Studies, an international tarot society that has a small but vibrant membership from various parts of the world. The ATS encourages, and is joined by those who have a keen interest in tarot studies and research in its various forms. Members who have actively requested such have a link in the members' area.

The ATS also recognises each member's right and responsibility in using tarot in their own individual manner. Our website aims to be of benefit to both member and non-member alike in ongoing tarot studies.

We hope you find our website helpful, and welcome your support in furthering the aims of the Association.

About the ATS

The Association for Tarot Studies began as a small group of individuals with varied and eclectic interests in tarot. As organisation of the 2005 Melbourne International Tarot Conference began to take shape in 2002, a new body also became incorporated as an Association in the State of Victoria, Australia. Membership has since grown to include individuals from various parts of the world. For further information about the Association for Tarot Studies, please refer to our membership page.

January 2009

AGM - important notice!

Association members please note that due to three of the four Committee members having double engagements on the previously announced AGM date, we have had to alter the date by a week to the 2nd Saturday – ie, the 10th January 2009, same place (at Dante’s, crnr Gertrude and Napier Sts, North Fitzroy), normal time of 2:00 pm. Given that most eligible members reside either interstate or overseas, I trust that this is not too inconvenient for those intending to attend. Still, I must apologise for this late notice.

Tarot Lovers' Calendar

A brief mention should be made – and how remiss of me to forget mentioning it earlier – that the 2009 Tarot Lovers’ Calendar produced by Major Tom Schick in the UK is available (as has been the case of late, in limited edition). I have not seen its content as yet but, if previous years’ is anything to go by, it will again be a wonderful production and well worth getting. Copies are available directly from Major Tom, funds supporting Aeclectic Tarot:

2009 Convention in Vic., Australia

Regarding the 2009 Convention, again please note the dates – 1st-3rd July. The committee is due to begin to put together details sometime during the next few weeks, so I hope to be able to provide more information in the next Newsletter that at this stage simply remains to be confirmed. If you are intending on possibly attending (and I do realise that even costs have not as yet been announced), please do let me know.

2005 Conference DVDs now back in stock!

By the time you read this, I am due to pick up a small number of DVD sets from the 2005 International Tarot Conference. If you were after a set, please do let me know and I’ll put one aside. I have not as yet altered the main order page for the set, and will do so after I have collected copies.

from Tarot-Casting to iTarot

Only a few days ago I received notification from www.tarotstudio.com about what is effectively the launch of its ‘Tarot Casting Software’ online as ‘iTarot’. The demo online version is limited to ten cards with, however, all features enabled for these. As this is not a review, simply an announcement, it’s worth having a look. Click on the ‘online tarot’ link from the left-hand panel of their main site:

And keep in mind...

the 2013 International Tarot Conference – Marseille, France

> events.html

If you are in the Melbourne region, please do drop in at Dante’s Café, crnr Gertrude & Napier Sts, Fitzroy, 2:00 pm, on the second Saturday for the AGM on the 10th of January!

As I am sending this Newsletter with the turn of the New Year, allow me the opportunity to wish each and everyone of you a safe, prosperous, and fulfilling year ahead, with each hurdle encountered overcome with ease and serenity. I look forward to meeting as many of this Newsletter’s readers at the AGM or next July at the 2009 Convention!

Frank Jensen The Story of the Waite-Smith Tarot Deck

The Story of the Waite-Smith Tarot

by K. Frank Jensen

Frank Jensen has long been amongst the key players in presenting information on the development of this important deck in the history of Tarot. During the second half of the 20th century, sales of this deck surpassed all others.

We now have the opportunity to read on this deck's history during its key phases during the past 100 years.

Whether a enthusiast for this deck or not, this will become a classic in manuscripts that focus openly on important developments. A welcome addition that the Association for Tarot Studies is proud to be able to present.

Tarot History

Without a sense of tarot's history, many claims are inaccurately repeated. One of the best sources for an overview of tarot's history is Tarotpedia's entry. Even its entry, however, is dependant on the research of numerous others.
